Beyond the night Description-

As we grow up, things and people change around us and while it may be easy to be overwhelmed as everything seems to leave you behind. We’ve all had people come and go from our lives, and we wanted to create a piece showing how a person who loses someone close to them in the tides of time can soon find their own footing again.

Hopefully we can all relate to being in such a situation and enjoy our animation.

Koh Chen Wei+

Biography
My name is Chen Wei, an aspiring Computer Graphics artist. I specialize in the lighting/visual effects and segments. I have an interest in animation and games ever since I was young. Ever since then, I began to pursue my interest in the Digital Animation course. I enjoy playing games, swimming and watching animated films during my free time.

Rizkika Nur Indah Binte Mohd Rodzan+

Biography
Hello! I’m Rizkika and also a member of Kitty Kat Productions. Before DDA and ITE, I’ve only ever known Art as a still picture looking nice on a wall or a magnificent sculpture in the middle of a showroom. Then I learned that Art can also be in the form of a moving picture, or Animation. Enrolling myself in ITE and SP DDA, it open my eyes to the history of animation and the people who made it happen. Although there are ups and downs in learning and picking up animation, I’m proud of where I am now and don’t regret while looking back. I’m glad, too, of meeting my past and present lecturers and classmates. They probably help mould me to what I am today. Blood, sweat, tears, sleep and lots of angst were sacrificed into making CATASTROPHE. Also money spent on loads of coffee and sugary drinks. But no regrets there. It was worth it making the short film with my team.

Strengths/Interests:
My strengths is my ability to pull through at the last minute. Mostly. My area of interests lies in Japanese culture and traditions, Korean culture and traditions, listening to ungodly loud music, American Movies and weird YouTube videos.

Ho Zi Yi Niccol+

Biography
Hello, Niccol here! When I was young I was not that interested in art, animation or anything of that sort. I did watch a lot of animated movies and cartoons, but it was just a form of entertainment and enjoyment to me. When I was 14 years old, I began to learn how to draw as I got interested in Anime and Manga. Later on, I became interested in other mediums of art and other art styles which I thought to be unique.

… I’d be lying if I said that I had passion for art since I was young. Instead, ironically, I was more interested in science, wanting to be a veterinarian (laugh). However, unable to pass through year 1 of JC made me rethink my path. Stumbling upon the Diploma in Digital Animation website, I was instantly drawn in. After joining SP, I realized that there was much more to animation and art. And although I have never taken Art as a serious subject before, I am willing to work harder so as to make up for my lack of experience in it. Being new to modelling and rigging has proven to be a challenge for me but it is a great new experience.

Strengths/Interests:
First of all, I do not like to ask for help unless need be. I like figuring stuff on my own just like jigsaw puzzles! Twice the fun. Secondly, I believe I am a fast learner and can pick up on/ get used to new things pretty fast. Thirdly, I believe that I am a perfectionist; I do my best to give the best that I can in what I do, I try to put in my best effort because I do not want the end result to be half assed.

Nicolette Chan Jia Ling+

Biography
Hi, I’m Nicolette. I’m the Character Designer, Storyboard Artist and Lead Animator for this project. I enjoy Animating in 2D very much and am trying to work on my 3D animation as well. Character Design is also one of my interests

Since I was a kid, I love to watch TV shows. I was so in love with the different art styles and how a certain character moves. But the thing i loved most was how it brought so many people together because of it. Just bringing up the topic of a certain show would bring people together, allowing them to discuss about their favourite characters, episode, or even theory. I thought it was amazing how this all brought people together, and wanted to be part of the process. That’s why I wanted to go towards the direction of animation shows or movies.

Coming to SP is one of the best things that happened to me. Not only was I able to meet so many wonderful friends, but lecturers as well. I learnt so much from other people, and some people learnt from me as well. I really enjoyed my time in SP, and I’m blessed to know so many wonderful artists, knowing that we will always be friends. Special thanks to Mr Iswan Sudaryo for always being such a wonderful friend and lecturer. He has always been there for me and my friends whenever we had trouble, and things would definitely be a lot more different if he wasn’t at SP to teach us for the first 2 years.

Teo Kai Qin+

Biography
Hello, my name is Teo Kai Qin, I am the prop designer and in-between artist for this project. I have an avid interest in creating stories and characters as well as concept art. My hobbies include cosplaying, writing short stories and reading. I’ve always loved cartoons as a child and even as a young adult. It was just something about having the power to create a world with simply a few strikes of a pencil that drew me to animation in the first place.

Getting into Digital Animation had not crossed my mind at all when I was Secondary 4 and awaiting my O’ levels. I was actually more pulled towards a Game Design course from a Polytechnic closer to home. But with the insistence of my father and a friend that studied in Singapore Polytechnic, I was brought to Singapore Polytechnic and was promptly introduced to Digital Animation. I was almost immediately sold thanks to the friendliness and certainty of a certain Lecturer. Mr Iswan Sudaryo made the course sound like so much fun and even insisted that it was the ideal course for people who love to draw. He was right. Looking back now, I would never trade my experiences for anything else. It had it’s tough times and stress but I feel like it had all been worth it for the new skills I’ve learnt.

Lee Jun Jie+

Biography
Hi there, I am Jun Jie. I'm an artist and animator who is focused more into character animation. When I was young, I used to have a thick notepad that allows me to create a short animation just by flipping the edge of the paper. The satisfaction of watching my own character move is what I enjoyed and this inspired me to expand my knowledge not just studying the core subjects, but also art. I took up the interest in this industry because of what Japan's animation did and it strikes my curiosity of thinking how they make their animation so lively. In the future, I hope that I will able to reach the quality of animation that the Japan produced and get the chance of working in Japan animation industry.

Biography
Hey, I am Yi Ren and I am interested in video compositing, lighting and rendering. I like to play with all kinds of colour correction and try to make my previous renders even better with the power colour correction. I also enjoy video compositing as well as lighting scenes. I got my interest from video compositing when I did stop-motion animation. My favourite part was to see my animation come to life, but adding effects such as visual and sound made the video come to life. I hope that I can do more things related to video composition and am willing to learn more to add to my skill sets.

Joseph Ong+

Biography
Hello, my name is Joseph Ong and I specialize mainly in 3D modelling and asset creation.

During the course of my final year project, I served as the leader to my group and helped in various areas of production, such as the aforementioned 3D modelling, asset creation and I also worked on rigging said models. I have always had a keen interest in drawing since I was young, which is a key reason why I joined DDA. Starting out, I had originally planned to do only 2D animation but was soon won over by 3D animation for its consistency and reusability. During my time in DDA, I developed a great interest in the creation of 3D models and sets which led me to specialize in asset creation.

I grow increasingly enamoured with this path of work each and every day, learning new things to use for my work and figuring out shortcuts and interesting methods to help me perform my work more efficiently and I hope to continue in this line of work after I graduate.

For my final year project, I worked mainly as the lead animator for the team and occasionally dabbled into other areas of production such as environment and prop designs. I worked with two talented friends of mine: Joseph and Matthew. Together, we have worked tirelessly to design and produce our 3D animated short, Memento.

I am grateful of the opportunities that I’ve been given during my time in Singapore Polytechnic, especially during my internship over at Sparky Animation Pte. Ltd. My experiences there has allowed me to learn so much more about layout, blocking out animated shots and animating in 3D. I’m hopeful that I can apply everything I’ve learned into this project.

Matthew Chia Kai Jun+

Biography
Hello. My name is Matthew and I’m the assistant leader of my final year group. I am the art director of the group’s project but I also serve as the concept artist, asset designer, storyboard artist, lighting and visual effects artist and production editor. I also handle the logistics of the team and supervise the production timeline for our animated short. Art, as a concept by itself, has always intrigued me with its ability to present a wide range of emotions through visual imagery and the use of colors. I especially adored how one could tell a story with just one single image or a series of images. As such, I took great interest with designing and concept art in general – from character designs to environmental designs etc. One of my other main interest lies in the subset of comics and with my knowledge of conceptualization, I’m working towards putting those skills into creating my own comic.

Strengths/Interests:

Interested in concept art – character designs in particular.
Interested in comics and storyboarding.
Capable of multitasking, leading and coordinating a small to moderately large team.
Capable of accessing a person’s skills and limitations and delegating the appropriate job for the individual(s).

Kok Ying Tong+

Biography
I am an inspiring lighting artist and character design artist that likes to play around with the lights and designs to achieve different results. It is rewarding to see how lighting the scene really gives it a sense of life by adding another touch of realism in addition to the modeling and animation. As for character design, it was fun to come up with the designs that would fit each character and that would show how the character is like even without interaction; solely based on the design itself.

I still have much to learn and improve and I hope to be able to hone my skills and I am excited of what results it would bring with a higher level of skill. I have been interested in animation and drawing since young and I hope to be able to also broaden my current skills set and improve on my animation and drawing as well. I draw my inspirations from various games and movies. It’s hard to just pick one because I find that inspiration can be found almost maybe even everywhere and anywhere.

Strengths/Interests:
I am good at lighting and character design as I tend to play around and think about how I should go about doing it and coming with variations before deciding on a final.

I like to play games and listen to music. Playing games and listening to music helps me to relax and allows me to find more sources to find inspirations from.

Shahirah Afiqah Binte Mohamed Yusuf+

Biography
Hey! Shah here, a lover of dinosaurs, cartoons, cats, bats, and hats. For this project, I helped come up with the story, character designs, storyboards and animation.

I’ve had a love affair with drawing from a young age, and I knew from early on that I wanted to be a storyteller. I love being able to send messages and ideas through visual mediums. It’s really just pure magic.

My dream is to be an author, or comic book illustrator, or storyboard artist. I love the idea of being able to create worlds and characters that leave an impact on the audience, long after the pages in the book have run out, or after the episode ends on TV.

During my spare time, I work on the many worlds in my head, connect with family and friends, and read books. Oh. And I manhandle my cat, Prince Spotsy-kun The First. He doesn’t mind.

I think.

Strengths/Interests:
Storyboarding and story development in general has been my passion. I love exploring characters through their actions and behaviour and appearance, and finding the perfect blend to get a personality across is always a challenge I like to try and conquer.

Speaking of characters, character design is another area I love to do. There’s just so many things that can describe a character–the way they stand, dress, move… I love thinking about how to bring all of these together to create one cohesive character.

I also love drawing and animating, both 2D and 3D.

I also took up Art O’ Levels to make my entry into an art course even easier. As the years went by, my interest in 3D animation became even stronger when watching game cinematics and movies, and how they have improved vastly over the years. This inspires me to work even harder to achieve my dream of becoming a 3D animator.

I plan to work in a game industry in the future and hopefully one day work for bigger studio names out there like Ubisoft, Naughty Dog, Valve, Blur Studios or Pixar. It’s a bit of a far-fetch, but I believe that one day I can achieve my dreams and go far in the industry.

Strengths/Interests:
I enjoy and specialise in doing 3D animations, especially action packed ones, be it parkour scenes or fight scenes, as they involve a lot of details in them to make them look dynamic and exciting for the viewers.

While watching movies or game cinematics, I tend to watch a lot of action packed scenes online to study how the characters are in motion, and understand how they move and how to make them look captivating for viewers.

Siti Nameerah Binte Rohiman+

Biography
Hi, I’m Meerah, I’m part of a group called Pass the Salt Productions, and I was in charge of lighting and textures, and helping out the director in anything that she needs.

I have always been mesmerized by cartoons and animated films. I have always wondered how it was made. Seeing images on paper move was a brilliant idea to get messages across. I went off to study animation in ITE and was pulled in even more into the world of animation. For 2 years, I specialized in 2D animation. In 2nd year of polytechnic, I then moved on to specializing in lighting. Being exposed to both 2D and 3D, I still have room to learn more to help improve my skill in the field.

I’m still hoping to join the big leagues like Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks. Even games studios like Naughty Dogs or Riot Games are also companies I hope to work for or with.

Strengths/Interests:
I have always loved traditional animation, including digital 2D animation. I also love doing storyboards, seeing the first draft of what the animation would look like and playing with the camera angles and shot is very interesting.

I’m also very interested in movies, any genre is fine, I tend to break the shot down to further analyze it and figure out why the director uses that angle and shot.

I enrolled in ITE and graduated in 2011, surprising myself by getting the top student and merit award. Then I served the nation, and after my ORD I enrolled in Ngee Ann Polytechnic(NP). But then how did I get into Singapore Polytechnic? Well I tried to apply at SP but apparently Diploma in Digital Animation(DDA) was not in the list of applications, so then I called the admissions office to find out why and asked for an interview to get in the course. They told me that they have reached the quota of students for the course and offered me different courses instead. Of course I said no and resigned to my fate and continued to study at NP. But then SP called me up for an interview. I got accepted into the course and the rest is history. Well from this you can see that I am a very determined person.

Here at SP I found out what I really wanted to do in this industry. And I really love to do compositing and editing. I also enrolled in the Diploma+ programme in Digital Film. I am the Director, Producer, Lighting Artist, Composer and Editor for Incognito.Martians.Studios, and Editor, Sound Engineer for my Diploma+ short film. Ummi Hanik Binte Abdullah+

Biography
Hello! My name is Ummi and I’m from team INKognito Martian Studio. I am the concept artist, character designer and the animator of the team.

A thing or two about me is that I love animation. Why animation? Well, I love how things are brought to life and to be given with such personality, even the simplest ball can be given life, just like Pixar’s lamp. I was inspired from those big companies who’ve produced great movies and it led me to find the animators who worked on the movies. For example, my first Disney movie was The Lion King and I was practically head over heels on Scar, and to find out that the one who animated him was in fact, Andreas Deja. He also worked on other Disney Villains, like Jafar, for example, and his animation is so smooth and fluid. And I kept thinking, how can one break the joints of the character, and make dynamic poses and smooth animation?

And this what had led me first to NITEC in Animation. I’ve always wanted to animate and there was a subject on animation in my secondary school but sadly, that subject is only open to Express stream students. So when i got to know that there is an Animation Course in ITE, I instantly went to apply for it and managed to got in. Graduated from ITE and now I managed to get into Diploma in Digital Animation (DDA).

My journey in animation so far had taught me a lot. From the basics of traditional animation to 2D and 3D animation, it has been wonderful.

I hope that my journey in animation will never end and that it will bring further.

Pang Chen Xi+

Biography
Since young, I have always been interested in animation, especially 2D Japanese animation. Therefore, this had made me decide to pursue Diploma in Digital Animation. However, being someone with minimal artistic background, the time I had at DDA was certainly a challenging one. Despite the difficulties faced, I continue to persevere and overcome this challenges, making my time at DDA a really memorable one. This is because I had learnt various animation production stages, and seeing my work improves throughout the whole course, due to my desire do better was a satisfying experience. This course had also trained me to be precise with my work to ensure quality as well as to be punctual in submitting the assignments. I am very keen in doing animation and background art especially for 2D animation. I will continue to work hard and pursue this industry regardless its medium, as long as I have the passion and determination in giving the best I can.

Low Ying Ci+

Biography
I was exposed to 3D when I was young. This has help me to decide what I wanted to do for my diploma. Being in this course I got a chance to be introduced to different kinds of arts and I found out that designing is what I really like, even though, my course is not big on designing. Design is simplicity and beauty that’s why I love it.

Through this course I’ve learnt a lot about myself. I’ve learned is that if people tells you that you can’t do it, listen to them but still do what you going to do and show them the results. Actions speaks louder than words.

“Listen, Smile, Agree and then do whatever the f*ck you were gonna do anyway” – Robert Downey Jr.

Liu Yan Xin+

Biography
Ever since my parents showed me Spirited Away, I was so amazed by the animations and character designs in the film. And every time I watched a new animation movie, my passion for animation and drawing grew stronger each day. When I was accepted into Singapore Polytechnic’s Diploma in Digital Animation (DDA), I was so happy that I could finally take a step closer to my dream. It might have been hard and tough at first, but I know my efforts would pay off soon.

Ever since I stepped into this course, they taught me how to manage time carefully and prioritize tasks efficiently. Creativity and passion was also needed too. They also taught me everything that has to do with animation. Although I have learnt quite a lot from these 3 years about illustration and animation, I’m sure I’ll still encounter more tips and tricks along the way. This will be a fruitful and exciting journey for me from now till forever!

The Sketchbook Description-

Our project has gone through numerous changes to get where it is now at the moment. Initially, our character designs were more streamlined, and channelled elements of Disney and children’s book drawings to create characters that were innocent and pleasing to the eye. When the dynamic of the group changed and two new members into the fold, we exercised a number of options to ensure that our project could go beyond our comfort level. In the end, we chose a new style for our characters that comprised of a mix between Ronald Searle and Tim Burton-gothic artists known for rendering their sharp line-work and occasional gaping eyes. This made regular personas like the everyday family in our short film eccentric and ultimately more engaging.

Our story remains largely unchanged and still focuses on the conflict between the sister and the brother character due to their different personalities. In early versions of the project, we wanted to have two of the parents present and focus their doting on the sister, leaving the brother even more estranged from his family than before. However, based on the feedback given to us from a previous lecturer, we decided to do away with the father so we could centralize the conflict among three characters equally. In a sense, it also cut the workload of the animator and modeller significantly, leaving them a bit more time to experiment with the existing characters, props and environment.

While our plot and characters have undergone a few changes, our storyboards have differed significantly from its earlier stages. In the previous iterations, we tried using a lot of dramatic camera angles and tended to use a lot of complex transitions. In addition to adding bulk to our time limit, our lecturer also pointed out that we did not always require dramatic camera angles to tell a coherent story-and that we required aim for clarity of narrative and visuals instead of just having a large amount of cameras.

In addition to keeping our culture-references subtle, we also tried using multiple types of lighting for different areas of the house to create dynamic scenes. This was our way of balancing out the removal of some of our cameras and streamlining of some designs with lighting that could still create a sense of atmosphere and mood without using too much resources. For example, areas like the living room and the sister’s bedroom contained lighting for both day and night cycles. This was a storytelling tool that also allowed us to show how much time had passed between significant beats in the story such as the period of time between the tearing of the sketchbook and the sibling’s reconciliation.

As of now, Nick remains where he is, trying to improve his craft and enjoying his time in school, learning from the people around him.

But drawing wasn’t really something big in her life until a Disney animator came to her school and gave a talk and thought the students how to do some easy drawings, and in that moment a spark happened. She had never really been good with words and drawing, painting gave her a major boost in confidence, ever since that day, you can find Denise hiding somewhere with her tablet in hand drawing some fan art or some original art on occasion. Her dream is to one day share her art and bring joy to those who seen them, but of course she knows she lacks in many areas, but she is determined to get better at them.

Tie Rex Description-

A Tyrannosaurus-Rex decides to do put on his own spectacles by himself one morning, but it is evident why he needs the help of his wife to put it on for him….

Generally, as an entire group, we learnt a lot of things that weren’t so different as to when we were working together for our past year module, Conceptualisation and Layout.

In Pre-Production, the focus is to explore what kind of possibilities we have in order to create a film that would stand out, and we found our strength in creating short films through comedy. A gag reel may be common nowadays, and that was where the first problem presented itself. Making the film amusing is easy, but making the audience laugh is an entirely different thing.

When designing the characters and props needed for the story, we explored so many varieties. In Jurassic Age, where dinosaurs lived, would their everyday necessities be as primitive as we can think of? Or were there other options we could include in making them unique instead? Through hard work and discussion, I think we found the answer.

Fariz Izwan Bim Amirhamzsa+

Biography
Hiya!

My name is Fariz Izwan Amirhamzsa and I am the Lighting Artist and Compositor of the group.
Prior to joining this course I never would have thought of pursuing a career in the art field. I grew up with watching Animated cartoons and playing Video Games, joining this course only made me want to contribute to the industry.
Working as an intern in Sparky Animations really opened my eyes about how rough producing a fully rendered animated show could be. Watching an animation and Producing an animation are two VERY different things. It is a huge personal undertaking, but the sense of satisfaction while watching the final product is just unbelievable.
I play A LOT of video games, and seeing the pre-production of games is a treat to me. Just looking at how they develop their ideas is amazing. Seeing how characters change not only in their physical aspect but also their mental aspect is really fascinating to me. That’s why whenever I’m not mindlessly playing video games, I’m always either doing some fan arts of characters I like or creating characters from scratch.
I would like to continue in this industry either in the Animation aspect or Games Development aspect. I hope to explore and learn more techniques on Illustrating and Digital Lighting to improve myself and be a valuable asset in the industry.

Strengths/Interests:

Good Team player
Able to work under pressure
Open to criticism
Love to play Video Games
Drawing Characters

Chai Hao Wei+

Biography
Sup guys!

My name is Chai Hao Wei and I am the Animator as well as the leader of the group.
To be best known for telling the stories I have created in my lifetime has been my dream for a very long time. During the internship, I realised just how passionate I have to be in order to work tirelessly in a team, in order to produce the best kind of results for our audiences. Though it may be gruelling, but the tough times enabled me to be really focused when I am needed to be in order to deliver work to the best of my abilities.
Working in the animation industry is competitive, but I realised that not many people actually have to be worried about securing a job as long as they are able to adapt to their new environment and are generally easier to work with than the rest. As for me and my team, I feel that they naturally have these abilities inside them and have no doubts that we are able to push on through to bring out each other’s potential in crafting our Final Year Project. As the leader of the group, I am generally proud of them for their valuable skillsets and couldn’t have asked for better friends, nor teammates from the entire course.

I am inspired by their stories and characters, and despite their distinctly different styles, the creativity within them really makes me want to learn CG creation.

Although I am not particularly interested in animation, I enjoy them nonetheless, but my goal is to work in game production. Through this course of Digital Animation, I have picked up skills and knowledge which are fundamental towards developing the skills I wish to attain. Having known about the animation workflow and pipeline is especially important for versatility.

Strengths/Interests:

Playing Guitar
Piano
Watching good films and playing good games

Biography
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do”

Hey there, I’m Zoey!
It started off with an interest in drawing and watching animated films that led me to realise that I wanted to pursue digital animation. Throughout my years in Singapore Polytechnic’s Diploma in Digital Animation course, I’ve learnt about the workflow and creation of animated films. This made me appreciate the hard work and dedication that has been put into the making of animated films.
During the course of my study, I have chosen lighting and compositing to be my specialisation as I was fascinated as to how lighting and compositing can change the entire mood of a film. As part of my final year project team, I am involved in character and prop design, storyboarding, texturing, lighting, effects and compositing.

I was given the great opportunity to intern at Sparky Animation as a VFX artist for 4 months. The internship gave me a chance to work individually as well as in a team with different people and to experience how work is done in the animation industry. As part of my internship, I was able to learn new things such as the creation of effects using Autodesk Maya and the use of the compositing software, Fusion. Thus, this has allowed me to not only broaden my animation knowledge but also to expand my skill set.

I am currently familiar with Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Mocha for After effects and Fusion.

Biography
I always have a passion in art. When I was young, I saw my cousin doing art assignment. I was fascinated by the colours and texture of the art piece so I offered a helping hand. Besides allowing me to help, she gave me a piece of paper to doodle on. She also taught me how to make the drawings more lively and engaging. Ever since, I would always join her whenever she does her art assignments and will create my own art piece too. I believe that was when I build up my passion towards art.

As I grew, my parents would bring me to art museums, buy me art materials and constantly encouraging me to draw. From time to time I would show them my doodles and they would hang them up on the wall as a sign of encouragement. When I turned twelve, my parents started to provide me with constructive feedbacks of my pieces, although my morale was down for some moments, it was when my mother explained that in order for me to improve my art work, I need more practice and receive constructive criticisms well. I followed her advices and has been practicing more.

I am determined to pursuit an art-related job, but I wasn’t sure of which type of job I should choose until I watched Disney’s movie, Tangled. Fascinated by the vibrant colours in the movie, I decided to become an animator. After having a clear idea of what to do, I enrolled into Singapore Polytechnic Digital Animation and had a yearlong internship at Sparky Animation Studio where I learned more about the industry pipeline and how it works. The things I learned during internship did not cover in school which helps me a lot with my skills, I can work much faster than I was one year before. I used to give up whenever I cannot solve the problem but during my time at Sparky, I will try to come out with a solution but if I could not solve it I will look for help and definitely not giving up until I get the task settled.

With deeper understanding of animation and the growing interest towards it, I wish to be working in the animation industry.

Biography
3D Asset creation is and will be always be my greatest passion in my life and creating inspiring models for the future asset creator to come is my goals in life. I am deeply inspired by highly detailed and realistic models as to me creating a model that’s looks as close to real life is a skill that should be greatly respected as it shows how much attention & dedication the artist give towards his creation.

As we all know there is a principle where it takes 10 000 hours to achieve mastery that’s why I am always open to feedback. To me, they are priceless as feedback brings another perspective to you, views that you alone can’t see which allows you to view your mistake and learn from it. That’s why I decided to enroll into Singapore Polytechnic to learn more about asset creation and to pursuit my passion.

I am greatly inspired by Anthony Jones with his realistic value and his awesome concept art. So during my free time I will practice not just modeling but also drawing as I believe you learn forms better when you draw it out which helps in modelling as you are able to construct the model in your mind before you model.

After graduation, I will continue to learn, to improve and to strive for greatness in my craft. Hopefully, one day my work will inspire people to pursuit this passion and pass on my legacy.

Internship Experience
I am a detail oriented team member and a hard worker, always putting my best effort t In making the 3D models as realistic and interesting as possible as I realized the importance of an appealing 3D model can be a great factor to the success or failure of the product.

During my internship in Bandai Namco Studios I learn so much in the game industry things like the pipeline workflow, new software like Unreal Engine 4 & Crazy bump and other some tips and trick to make my asset creation progress more efficient. By the end of the internship I felt that my skills has improved greatly due to the great guidance of my Supervisor and the whole modeling team.

So I would like to thank my supervisor and the Modelling team from Bandai Namco for being so patient in guiding me throughout this 1 year internship. All the feedback & knowledge I received which will path the way for me to become a 3D asset artist is all thanks to them. But all this wouldn’t be possible without my Lecturer, Miss Wendy for giving me the chance to work with such a great company and the lecturers of DDA who always there to help me to learn and improve when I know nothing about this industry when I first came in.

Biography
Hello my name is Michelle Ong, I’ve been working in Sparky Animation as a Layout Artist for a year now.

I’ve always been interested in art as a child and have been learning how to draw by observing my environment. I’ve always been interested in making my own animation in the future. I became more serious with my passion when I entered Digital Animation in ITE central. I’ve started to take interest with 3D base animation after learning how to use maya.
I’ve also took part in Singapore film festival and was proud to have my FYP shown on the screen.
As someone who likes to learn/explore different mediums, I sometimes play with different software or listen to tutorials online to help me learn how to cheat/fasten my pace to finish my product.

I’m a fast learner and is open to learning to new things, I’m also hardworking as I try to get my work done before my due date. I also enjoy getting feedback so I could improve my skills in the future.

Internship Experience

During my internship in Sparky Animation, I was placed into the Layout department which was completely different experience for me because my core module in DDA is Modelling. I’ve struggled a lot for a few weeks because I don’t have a lot of knowledge on Animation and how the graph editor work.

After my 10 months trip in Sparky Animation, I’m glad to have the opportunity to work on different projects and meet new people in there. I’m lucky to have a supervisor who is patient with me and helped guide me in this new area. I’ve felt I’ve gain new knowledge for Layout and improved my communication skills a lot.
Overall, I’m happy with my experience in Sparky and would like to thank Singapore Poly for this opportunity

    Biography
I’ve always had a passion for art, from pencils to paint, I always loved scribbling down little drawings of stories I dreamt of in my wild little head, so I could remember them when I grew up and be able to tell those stories to others in the future.

After completing my O’ levels, I knew that I wanted to pursue a job that would make me happy, and I knew it had to be in animation. I LOVE animation, ever since I was young. Whether it was 2D or 3D, asian or western, movies or TV shows, their ability to tell stories that transcend time and captivate the hearts of children and adults alike was magical to me! Animation pushed the boundaries of storytelling, shaping ideas from thoughts and dreams into reality, bringing us to places that you can’t even imagine. I want to show others the power and the joy of animation, which is why I decided to pursue Digital Animation at Singapore Polytechnic.

The three years of learning has really taught me a lot. The 1 year internship experience I received in my final year has especially helped me be quick and independent in my work, and has provided me with knowledge of the production pipeline in the fast paced industry. My goal is to better improve my 3D animation skill and speed, and maybe pursue in learning more about 2D animation as well.

My biggest dream is to be able to make a difference in the animation industry, and inspire others to strive for their dreams as well.

    Internship Experience
You can’t blame me for being worried at the start.

Sparky was known throughout the cohort as “the workplace where you’ll never sleep”, a place where every 2nd year student was worried they might end up in when they started internship.

However, Sparky was far from what the weird rumours had foretold. I joined as a layout artist, setting up cameras and sets for the animators to use, and after a few months moved my way up as one of the character animators myself. It was definitely tough the first few weeks, getting use to the production pipeline and crunch times, but after a whole year of working there, I’ve learnt so many things that I would have never experience from just staying in school! My supervisors were so kind and knowledgable, and everyone was really nice there! Working first hand on actual productions really helped to improve my speed in animation, and I received a lot of helpful advice from my supervisors that would benefit me in the future. It was definitely an amazing experience! Sometimes you shouldn’t believe what the rumours are saying, go out and experience it for yourself, maybe in the end, you would have had a great time like I did!

    Strenghts/ Interests

    ToomBoon (2D Animation)
    Adobe Photoshop (Drawing/Painting/Editing)
    Adobe Illustrator (Drawing/Painting/Editing)

Though I am serious about work and punctuality, I am also fun and outgoing, love learning and trying out new things. I am not afraid to interact with others, and always eager to ask questions, have experience in leadership positions. Finally, I am very passionate. I always believe that one should strive for excellence, that if there is something that you believe in, you have to give it your 110% and go for it no matter what.

I’ve always enjoyed watching movies, especially animated films and TV shows. I also take great interest in games, always being in know of the latest games trends and news. When I’m alone, I like to come up with stories to create in the future, as well as draw and read. I enjoy doing arts and crafts, and love trying new mediums from painting to sewing and everything in between. But most of all, I love inspiring and motivating others to be the best they can be.

    Internship Experience
Working at Bandai Namco Studios Singapore was a very fruitful experience where I was able to be introduced to the work behind the creation of games. It has been an eye-opening experience, having worked with creative professionals from the industry. It was not easy when I first began working and I truly struggled in the beginning, however, I was keen to learn and adapt to the workflow as quickly as I could. I overcame my initial struggles by working even harder and have continued to make valuable contributions to the team.

During my time at Bandai Namco, I realised the importance of working with others. Teamwork and communication with others was key to creating great projects. This was especially true while I was working as a UI Artist on my second project. I was constantly interacting with different people from other departments like Programmers and Game Designers. Taking the initiative to clarify details and the direction we were heading in, I was very active with communicating with others.

Whenever I was given a new project to work on, I approached it with enthusiasm and curiosity. I was not afraid of asking any relevant questions as they helped answer the many concerns I had and resolved the concepts which I was unfamiliar with. I am very thankful for my supervisors who were patient with me and gave me an immense amount of advice. Their input has helped me grow as an artist and as an individual. I have become more sensitive to the world around me. This has helped me develop a better artistic sense and the ability to bring realism to my 3D models. Paying more attention to details like scratches and rust, I am able to reference and apply these to my works.

All in all, I have gained invaluable advices and experiences throughout my yearlong internship at Bandai Namco Studios Singapore.

    Biography
I was born and raised in Singapore. As a child, it has always been my passion to draw and watch cartoons on television. I developed my skills as time passed and this helped me decide to enrol into Singapore Polytechnic to earn my Diploma in Digital Animation. I am currently specializing in 3D Animation, and I hope to further improve my competence in illustrating.

I am a hard worker when it comes to achieving my goals and dreams. I am also a fast learner, as well as being self-motivated and passionate about my work and interests. I enjoy receiving feedback on my work as I am eager to learn new skills to broaden my knowledge.

My hobbies include playing video games, listening to music, writing, reading and being with my family and friends. When it comes to video games, I love solving puzzles and playing role playing games or first-person shooters.

    Internship Experience
During my internship at Bandai Namco Studios Singapore, I joined the Animation department as an Animation intern. It was a very new experience for me since it was my first internship, and I got to know what it was like to work with other artists to help build the project together. There were a variety of people there, everyone was very friendly and I felt welcomed.

As an Animation Intern, I helped to animate cutscenes, as well as learning how to polish motion capture animation. My supervisor and mentors have been an enormous help to me by giving me lots of feedback and showing me multiple reference videos for animation. They were very patient with me and I was able to understand the fundamentals of animation much better, and I felt that I had improved a lot under their guidance and hence I am extremely grateful to them. I also understood the importance of teamwork and communication that can help bring the project to fruition, and it is because of everyone’s combined efforts that we are able move forward.

I would like to thank Bandai Namco and Singapore Polytechnic for this opportunity, the experience has been invaluable and I will never forget it.
