The Machine Description-

The original version of the story was very metaphorical and it took place in a universe where a civilisation of people enticed by a strange machine that made them feed it trees in exchange for gifts. Over time the story became less surreal and more grounded in ‘reality’ with a science fiction theme. The concept of a machine that enslaved people remained throughout the different iterations of the story.

The main theme of The Machine focuses heavily on the main character Zana’s journey from being fearful and apprehensive to becoming courageous and strong-willed as her father Xavier becomes enslaved to the machine. The story is driven by her and the story serves to develop her character in turn, she discovers the cave with the machine and she eventually destroys it in order to reunite with her father. Furthermore, the story revolves around Zana and Xavier’s familial bonds. We learn that almost losing the other leads to their motivations before and during the story.

We had the help of many DMIT lecturers throughout the film. Mr. Ahmad al-Mahir gave us plenty of input throughout production and kept us on track, Mr Denis Tong helped us fulfil most of the special effects and fleshed out the animations in the film, Mr Mahathir helped us out when our character rigs broke and story came to fruition with input from Mr Ed Gavin of Ringling College of the Arts and Ms Stella Wee from the Diploma in Creative Writing for TV and New Media (DTVM).

On their mission to find a new, inhabitable planet to colonise, Zana and her father Xavier stumble across a strange cave near their campsite. While exploring the cave, Xavier comes across a strange machine known as Zvor and is enslaved by it. It’s up to Zana to find the courage to rescue her father and destroy Zvor…

The story of The Machine was made to bring together various challenging ideas and concepts. A science fiction themed story focusing on the bonds between family members as well as a story about growing braver in the face of adversity. This film is celebrates the strength of the mutual love between parents and children alike even though we can’t see it.

Elden Ng+

Biography
Hi I am Elden , a final year student pursuing a Diploma In Digital Animation. Since young, I had been a huge fan of trading card games, whether if its on the mobile platform or physical form of card games. I’ve always been admiring the beautiful artworks of the cards and would dream of creating some of it one day.  This interest of mine made me start to copy those artworks by drawing them with a pencil on paper. Soon enough, I got addicted to it and would always draw during my free time.

Later part of my life as a teenager, ive started playing mmorpg games that are done by companies such as blizzard and riot. This sparked my interest in wanting to learn how to create 3D models hence I decided to enroll into an art related course for my Polytechnic education.

Throughout the 3 years in SPDDA, I am proud to have learnt new things such as modeling, digital painting and digital sculpting. Ive seen myself started out as a weaker student compared to my peers  but through hardwork and dedication, I can see that I have grown and improve to become a better artist.

In the future, I would like to further study to learn more and would like to be able to work in a game studio as an illustrator or a 3D modeler.

Gideon Yeo+

Biography
“If I follow my dream and it shatters – I can accept having to regret that. But I don’t want to regret not pursuing it in the first place.”- Tsugumi Ohba

Hi there, my name’s Gideon. I’m the storyboard artist and animator of the IMAGINA team. I work with the director and storywriter to produce the visual draft of the film. Translating the story into sequential pictures is a challenging yet exciting process that I really enjoy.

Being stuck to the television screen from young was where my love for visual storytelling started. As a kid possessing wacky imagination, I started drawing my own characters and creating my own worlds. I found it easier to express myself through pictures than verbal, thus I would show my comics to my friends and watch their expressions as they read it. As I grew, I got to know more about animated films, about how its story and art has the ability to attract both young and old audiences.  I felt a calling to pursue this line of work- to create an animated film. After all, what great is a life without a big dream? Thus, I decided to study in the fields of Digital Animation.

– Reading
– Digital illustrations
– Traditional animation

Clemens Khong+

Biography
Hi, I’m Clemens. I am the character modeller for the Imagina project film titled ‘The Machine’.

I began my journey in the field of arts in 2014, where I enrolled in Digital Animation at Singapore Polytechnic. I have always been intrigued by the wonders of art since young. The ethereal world it offered was without boundaries compared to reality, and it left me awestruck. It wasn’t until several years back when I decided to pursue arts for the rest of my life and turn my mediocre childhood doodles into bigger goals.

The three years in SP DDA has been tiring but fruitful. The tight deadlines and troubleshooting of software limitations has trained me to handle pressure well. Apart from learning new skillsets such as modelling and digital sculpting, I have also improved in figure drawing throughout my three years in the course.

After completing my national service, I would like to further improve my skillset in Digital Painting and Digital sculpting by enrolling into private courses. Being a fan of the fantasy genre and Japanese animation, I hope to create concept designs for companies like Square Enix, Applibot or cygames in the future.

Strengths/Interests:
– Sketching
– Painting
– Visual effects
– Graphic Design

Achievements:
– Photography work selected by director of Business school
– Awarded with Certificate of Completion from Digital Hollywood University (2014)

Show & Tell Description-

Show & Tell is a film about conquering your own fear.
Charlie has always been timid and antsy around crowds.
One day, he was tasked for a Show & Tell performance and he faces his fear of public speaking.
Then, his imagination ran wild.

The base of the story started with the idea to focus on a kid.
Kids’ imaginations are limitless; our ideas could be limitless too, as with their imagination .
Following, comes the idea of a different world, to bring out our different strengths perhaps with a different style or colour or modelling, etc.

It went through several edits here and there but generally the main idea retains.

The idea of the shadow came from the original story where Charlie was afraid of his own shadow and runs away from it. The story came from an inspiration of one of Goro Fujita’s gif drawings – where a pyjamas kid shone a torch at his shadow and it was ‘erased’.

This previous story was pinpointed for a lack of a climax, so it was discontinued as there wasn’t a satisfying climax we could come up with while juggling with the technicality of lighting which none of us were familiar with.

Elements of the old story was preserved as we tweak the story.

Character designs were revised many times to achieve an optimal look of appeal. Establishing and reestablishing his personality, colour scheme and proportions. The character was then further adjusted in production but it was a good decision made. It have dramatically improved the look of Charlie!

Rigging was done from scratch with no auto rigs unlike the industry, it was tedious. So we work our way around by rigging one good rig with scalable controls to reuse and make subtle changes for the classmates.

Animations were a grueling spartan training for the animators. There were a lot of characters and a limited time. We worked on many run cycles to ease the workload out for the Shadow World, so that we can focus on animating the other areas.

It was an ambitious project with the amount of characters and sets.
Throughout the process, unfortunately, we had to drop some ideas that we had initially because of time constraints.
Overall, it was a good learning stepping stone for all of us; understanding how our strengths and majors could be put together and also how to cover our flaws for each other as a team.

Special thanks and acknowledgement to our supervisor, Mr Denis Tong, for giving great tips and advices of improvement for animation, workflow and occasional ideas to fill in the plotholes.

From coaching and debugging in rigs to insights on improvement, it brought gratitude to our hearts as our lecturers, Mr Mahathir, Mr Ahmad and Ms Wendy guided us through the process.

It was our first animated short film, there were plenty of things that we didn’t know and we could have improved on.
However, we believe that it was a good experience that we’ve took upon throughout this journey.

“We all have to start somewhere, and this is where we begin.”

Thank you.

Brenda Lim Synn+

Biography
I am currently a final year student in Singapore Polytechnic studying for a diploma in digital animation.

Student in Singapore Polytechnic, Diploma in Digital Animation
Took Art for ‘O’ Levels during secondary school

When i do art related things out of my own accord, it’s to train myself skills-wise, bring light heartedness to people who see it or i just do it just to relief stress. A phrase that encourages me to not give up when practicing is this :
“We all have 10,000 bad drawings in us. The sooner we get them out the better.”
― Walt Stanchfield
“You’ve got ten thousand bad drawings in you, and they all have to come out before the good ones can get through.”
― Rephrased by Dale Leys

I am very inspired by works of Rauch Brothers Animation (http://rauchbrothers.com/ ) , they work with StoryCorps and produce very heartwarming animation based on each person’s story:)
Also by Ryan Woodward, when i saw his work “Thought of you” on 2 dancers.
I like works close to the heart because it really motivates me through my mind and heart.

Illustration wise, Adrian Adehogan and illustrator in Japan (https://instagram.com/adehogan/ ) has really nice illustrations and paintings of people on streets, and has the style and feel i would like to achieve in the future(:

I am a loser for water color art works as i find it very interesting how it can turn out differently based on different artist. So currently the water color artist that is constantly leaving me in awe and admiration is Graham Berry. I have yet to learn how to use negative space while water coloring. So that’s something i would like to achieve for my journey in water coloring.

Studying in SP has got me exposed to soft-wares like

Maya : where i learnt basic modelling and animating

Toon Boom : where i learnt how to rig a basic 2d human puppet and animated it. I have used it for traditional animation and simple lipsyncing too.

Photoshop : to paint digitally and edit photos

Aftereffects : to compile video cuts

On my own free time, i would color and illustrate.
and i also like soft styles that are mostly used in story book illustrations.
Like illustrations by http://www.okada-chiaki.com/

I would love to continue to get inspired as i learn more things in the art industry. Hopefully my works in the future are able to tell live stories of others that are close to their hearts. Or make them feel peace in their hearts or a fresh energy regained, for them to be able to stay positive despite their situation and continue living in life. They don’t have to be on worldly issues, just things that a worth giving a thought about.

Chen Jin Mei+

Biography
Hi! I’m a student based in Singapore. I go by Jun Tan as my English name. I enjoy drawing and sketching in my free time. I do some modeling, lighting and visual effects.
I am greatly motivated by works like the Japanese animated films by Studio Ghibli, works from DreamWorks and Pixar’s. I like to explore insights and techniques gained from watching other artist’s works and trying them out. Due to my fascination for animation, I decided to step into the industry as I enrolled in polytechnic.

The 3-year course in Digital Animation helped me get accustomed to digital arts and improve on my traditional drawings. I’m able to draw still life and landscape, do character design and concept art. I was also taught to use software like Autodesk Maya to do modeling, texturing, sculpting, rigging and lighting.

At the end of my 3-year course, I had the fortune to internship at Sparky Animations as a visual effect artist. It was something new to me, and I learnt a lot on how to simulate and create effects in many creative ways. The workload as a effect artist fluctuates a lot. When the schedule is really tight, there is a need to be creative and resourceful to get the work done.

Goh Xiao Xuan Winnie+

Biography
Hi there, I am Winnie. I am very shy by nature so if I were to avoid you in anyways I mean no ill-will.
Animation had always been my passion since a very young age . My childhood was filled with animated films from Disney, Dreamworks, Warners Brother, etc.  Since then I had never stepped out of the art world. Throughout my academic years, I had been working on improving my traditional skill sets until I entered Singapore Polytechnic where I was introduced to Digital Media.

I was never good at digital work. I never saw the appeal to work on a computer and dreaded when we needed to touch Photoshop or even Maya. After 3 years in DDA, I can say that I have improved vastly in the digital world and can now draw, paint, and definitely animate on a computer.

Fortunately I was given the opportunity to work in Sparky Animation as a layout artist. I have a much better understanding to camera angles and how a production pipeline works. It is hectic.

Currently, I am very intrigued in experimenting with different drawing style; currently trying out Glen Keane’s and Miranda Yeo’s character design styles.

After graduation, I wish to pursue further education to improve my skills and to gain more skills and knowledge that could help me with my career.

Lee Min Ru+

Biography
Hello, from the other side, I’m Min Ru.
I have many small quirks that formulate my personality; it’s good to keep the unique side of you. Afterall, that’s what make us, us!

I enjoy doing arts as well as science.

I major in Illustration/ Concept Art and Rigging.

Many raised their eyebrows when I mention the two majors, it was an uncommon combination.

Rigging was new to me and it could be thought as boring in the beginning. However, I am a huge science geek so I could understand the technicality of it.

I enjoy drawing characters and I make an effort to sketch on the train every day to work or school. Many artists inspire me, particularly Kim Jung Gi, with his dynamic angles and free flow of ideas and details.

As much as the concept art industry is competitive, drawing has always been therapeutic and fun, so I want to enjoy the future working on something I enjoy as well.

I used to be one of the people who prefer live action over animation, but my perspective was changed when I entered DDA.

The admission was an attempt purely to improve my drawing skills. As I learnt more about the animation industry and works, I was fascinated.
At the same time, I began to watch more animated films.

The amount of work and effort should never be undermined.

My ideas are often based around “Why animation?”

Why not live action? Can the animation hit the audience emotions harder than other mediums?

Because I want to contribute and bring the audience on a feels trip.

Tan Jiahao+

Biography
I have always loved and hate to face the unknown. Well there is a fine line between love and hate, isn’t there?

And my exposure to the unknown? One main source of it is through a visual screen – the television. There are also books. And the guidance from my teachers who have corrected me and showed me the right path. There are many things in this world that are wonderful and its not easy to realise them. Hence, I aspire to be one who can also show the wonders of the world to everyone. Be it through visuals, through words, or through experiences.

The groups of people who get together and create an amazing film together are, themselves, amazing. Stunning visuals, characters with deep backstory and lets not forget the memorable plots. Inspired, I enrolled into the course of Diploma in Digital Animation in the year 2012. I then further specialized in character animation, due to my keen interest in character behaviour and the art of expressing.

Now that I am reaching the final year of the course, it is a blessing that I am given this opportunity to learn so much about the animation industry. Storyboarding, creating great concepts, the art of showing, and many more. All these skills will help me pursue my goal to showing and sharing the world with others. With the spirit that my teachers passed down to me, I too aspire to be a teacher – one that can show others that the world isn’t so bad after all.

Strengths/Interests
Creating stories (storyboards included) & graphic design. 2D & 3D animation. Character / Environment concept design.

Tan Si Yuan+

Biography
My name is Tan Si Yuan and I am a digital animation student at Singapore Polytechnic. I decided to study in this course because I like drawing and this was one of the few courses that had drawing as one of the modules. I also love watching animation so I thought it would be fun to try and do some animation myself.

As a child, I was always intrigued by drawings and would always try to do some drawings of my own. Because of this, I improved in drawing due to my constant practice. Growing up, I started to pick up comics and became inspired to draw comics of my own. However, as I grew up, I started to do less drawing and spent more time on my laptop.

I interned at Hutcabb Consulting Private Limited and helped them to develop two games for stroke patients using Unity. While there, I learned how to do programming in the C# language by myself and used this knowledge to create two unity games with differing gameplay and working functionality.

Strengths/Interests
I am competent in the use of software such as maya, zbrush, Photoshop and unity which I picked up while studying in my course.

As someone who is able to work well in a team, I believe that I am able to work well with other people whether it be in a school project group or in the workplace.

I am also quick at finishing most work assigned to me and am almost always able to meet deadlines.

I am always open to criticism and am willing to learn.

I aspire to be a character concept artist or comic artist. I believe that my passion will make these dreams become reality.

Computer graphics has always been my interest since young. When I was a child, television exposed me to fantastical movies such as The Spiderwick Chronicles and The Chronicles of Narnia. The sheer beauty of the visuals and dramatic expression was enough to ignite a passion in me.

My journey into this line of art started when i started tinkering with a software called iClone. I was able to create a simple animation and it hooked me. After that, Bryce and Daz Studio came my way and I dabbled with fervour. However, I was just barely wetting my feet in CG. Blender was my first tool that I was really absorbed in as it was free and powerful. There were also many examples of inspiring art created with it. At that moment, I felt that I had seriously stepped foot into the magical world of digital art.

I am currently a digital animation student at Singapore Polytechnic, learning more about digital arts. Currently, my specialisations includes modeling, lighting and rendering. Light and colour are important essences to my work as it is integral for painting forms with a story. I always try to tell a story with each of my works. It is my belief that a picture tells a thousand words and with it, a tale is born. As such, I always seek out new lighting techniques and frequently experiment with different shaders in rendering engines. Light and colour are always intriguing to no end and that I will always pursue and glean inspiration.

My childhood diet of stories and richly illustrated books has had a great influence on my art. Enid Blyton and C.S. Lewis are some of the authors that wrote inspiring stories. In a later part of my life, I discovered Japanese animation and had influences from it.
In the course of my journey in art, I hope to be an artist who will create works that weave stories and enrapture minds of many.

Perfect Fit Description-

“Friendship is like a jigsaw puzzle. You’ll come to realise that you’ll fit in perfectly just by being yourself.”

Baz is a pompous toy who is proud of his looks and figure. He flaunts it every day, oblivious to the fact that the other toys are unimpressed.

Desperate for attention, he decides to pull off an audacious stunt which eventually cause him his arm. Without it, he felt broken (pun intended) and ashamed. His daily annoyances then came to a halt and soon, the toys felt the silence.

They knew they had to do something…

In life, there will be a point in time where you feel like you don’t belong anywhere. Just like Baz, some of us may try too hard to fit in with others. In the midst of that, some will pretend to be someone that they are not and eventually forget who they really are.

Perfect Fit is a light hearted film which revolves around our main character, Baz. In the film, he tries to pull off stunts which are dangerous and reckless to try to impress the other toys. Eventually, through a series of events, he learns that true friends will always accept you for who you are and not for what you do.

Baz5 Productions hopes to bring across this message to everyone through this short film.

Danish Iftikhar+

Biography
I am an aspiring animator/concept artist who took an interest in animation all the way back in primary school. I would always draw my own stickman comics at the back of the class, with some being confiscated by my teachers. Even then, I took enjoyment in coming up in stories and having my classmates read them.

I then decided that I want to bring my stories to another level, which was to have them animated and maybe someday, into full-length animated films. And so, that is one of the reasons as to why I am where I am now.

Currently, I am working on a comic that I hope to publish in the future. It is a story which I started writing about when I was still in secondary school. Only recently did I come across it again and I decided to dust it off and start over.

An inspiration that pushed me into animation was most notably Walt Disney. His achievements and accomplishments still amazes me to this day. In the future, I hope to be able to reach his level of success in the industry.

Strengths/Interests
Some of my strengths are that I try to always be a team player, work with instead of against people. I will also go out of my way to complete a task as soon as possible and will never give up on it.

I enjoy creating stories, sketching, drawing and painting them digitally. I also like to game and draw comics in my free time.

After graduation from Secondary school, I decided to take up the animation course in ITE and thereby start my path as an animator.

Strengths/Interests
Some of my strengths are rigging, and modelling. I am also eager to learn and I adapt well in new environments. I believe that I will always give my best in completing my assigned tasks.

I enjoy modelling robots as their gears and parts are fascinating. I also enjoy gaming, drawing and building Gundam in my free time.

Tan Wan Ning+

Biography
Hello, I’m Wan Ning, born and raised in Singapore. From young, I have always adored how the characters are being portrayed in films made by Studio Ghibi, Pixar and Disney. They inspire and further ignited the passion of drawing in me.

The passion in drawing has stayed with me and made me love Digital painting. I find immense fun as I sketch out imageries I had in my mind. However, I can only find complete satisfaction and joy when I paint out life in my sketches through digital painting. I feel that this process of portraying images in my head out is the greatest pleasure in my life.

Since joining the Digital Animation course, I realized how exciting it would be to transform 2D characters and objects into 3D. It really seems like I am giving them a whole new world by modelling them out. I also find it really amazing that I could easily pose my 3D models and the fact that they aren’t constrained by limitations in 2D is really incredible.

In addition, I love music and have been learning piano since 13. When playing it, I enjoy the feeling of music flowing out of my piano. As quoted by Jacqueline Carey – “All knowledge is worth having.” I believe that this hobby and the knowledge gained from it give me more insights and inspirations on what I do.

Every so often, I would translate mangas I love from Chinese to English. Initially, I did it to maintain my Chinese and English language skills. Eventually, I found it quite enjoyable as I am able to convey the original artists’ message to others that couldn’t understand Chinese.

Strengths/Interests
3D modelling in Autodesk Maya and Zbrush
Hobbies include drawing, playing piano and reading manga

Vanessa Tan Li Ru+

Biography
Growing up, I enjoyed watching animated films. I adore Disney animated movies such as The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Tarzan, Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled and so on. Each film I watched either made me laugh, or touched my heart. Thus, I embarked on this journey to spread the joy of watching films.

Digital Animation has moulded me to who I am today. It instilled discipline as well as perseverance as being an animator/modeller is not an easy job. It requires a lot of passion and time. At that point in time it seems like it really sucks, BUT when you see the outcome of your hard work, it pays off.

Given a chance, I would also like to venture more into films and TV. I aspire to write and direct my own films both animated and live-action.

Strengths/Interests
I am a team player and can adapt well in ever-changing environments. I’m also good at keeping the team on track in terms of schedule.

I like to sing at the top of my voice even thought I can’t sing. I also enjoy watching movies and playing the guitar during my free time.

Hunted! Description-

“The hunter gets hunted”, was the concept that we worked around for our short film.

The original story follows a simple journey of a young mole, driven by his curiosity, leaves his home to explore the world above the ground. His excitement gradually brought him to the harsh reality of a foreign territory, where there were only food he could not recognise and animals that preyed on him. He finds himself cornered but eventually was saved by his mother.

However, we wanted to create something more. Rather than a simple journey, we wanted the mole to be in a situation where he had to turn from his nature and do the extreme, and this is how our story pieced together.

Hunted is a story of a young mole, Max, who was out for a hunt, only to find out, he was not the only one. From behind the bushes, pounced a big Fox, and the chase began. Max’s manoeuvrings through the grove lost the Fox. However, things did not end there because with Max’s safety came the danger for a mother Bird and her egg. He hesitates and has to make a decision.

Wong Jia Qi+

Biography
Hey there, I’m Jia Qi!

As a child, I’ve always wondered how cartoons or animated films were made as I watched them and loved the little snippets of ‘Behind the Scenes’ shown on cartoon channels. All these characters telling stories with thousands of drawings – something that had since fascinated me.

After ‘O’ levels, during the Polytechnic Open House, I chanced upon the course Digital Animation in Singapore Polytechnic and was reminded of the career that I had much interest in, wanting to find out more behind the magical production of these films.

Initially, it was a bit intimidating to be studying something that I’ve not much confidence in, especially having not taken any art subjects. However, through these 3 years, I’ve learnt many different aspects, from 2D to 3D animation; concept art to lighting. It involved a lot of hard work and practice, but nevertheless, a once-in-a-lifetime journey from beginning to the end.

Besides animated creations, games were also an aspect that I’ve always been keen in. I love playing games, ranging from consoles to mobile. I had the opportunity to intern at the Ministry of Education, to create art assets for various simulation and educational games. This had broaden my mindset of how animation could be applied to not only in entertainment, but also to assist in learning. Creation of simple games during my internship had also exposed me to the various parallels and differences with film making, and since then had deepen my interest in game production.

Moving ahead, I am determined to learn new techniques and continue to enhance my skills from the industry. I would like to immerse myself in creating such films and games that had brought me much entertainment since I was a child.

Evelyn Lau+

Biography
HEY there!

Art to me is more than a bunch of nice pictures. It is a form of expression that is raw and genuine. From a young age I always catch myself gravitating towards drawing as a platform to represent my emotions. Animation was an extension of all that.  My interest turned into a hobby, and my hobby turned into a passion.

I came into DDA with little to no background. It was only through the course that I was exposed to 3D animation and 3D modelling. Creating something out of nothing? That really intrigued me and as time passed by I knew I was leaning strongly towards 3D modelling and ultimately that is where my passion lies.

I hope to never leave this industry. I want to join the game or film industry one day and stay there for the rest of my life. For now, I will just have to see where this life takes me and maybe I will see my name on the credits someday.

Marcus Liew+

Biography
While art, or pursuing it as a profession and lifestyle, has never occurred to my mind when I was very young, I could always remember one of the most fun times in my life was when I was just simply drawing on a blank piece of paper. Creating universes filled with characters and stories where I could always go and imagine myself there, as a sort of escapism from the rather dull and sometimes hostile world we live in. Or perhaps having a healthy diet of cartoons and comics did encourage me further as the years went by.

At age 14, I decided that going for a career in the commercial arts was going to be an exciting adventure for me. Fast forward till now, I don’t have any regrets of deciding to make art be a bigger part of my life. While it has matured me on how I view art now, it is also a way to help me reconnect with my younger self, the one having fun drawing like there was no tomorrow.

Besides aiming to land myself in a reputable studio or company that creates fun and challenging intellectual properties (IP), I myself have an ambitious goal on creating and sharing art that people will remember and enjoy it forever, both emotionally and intellectually. And it can be anything, from films, comics, gallery exhibitions or even murals! But of course the journey to the destination is just as important. I hope to impart my own knowledge in Singapore and abroad with enthusiasm and humility, and learn to improve and challenge myself along the way.

Toh Ting Yu+

Biography
I’m Ting Yu, a final year student from Diploma in Digital Animation in Singapore Polytechnic majoring in illustrations and 3D modelling.

I chose this course because when I was young I always aspire to become an artist. Moreover, my family has been a great fan of animated films as long as I could remember. Due to their influences, I started to enjoy doodling and come to love drawing.

The reason I joined DDA is to follow my passion for drawing. Before entering this course, I could only mimic other people drawings. Now, I have explored many different type of mediums and was able to self-motivate and challenged myself to better improve on my skill.

In the future, I would like to continue this passion of drawing and hope to further enhance my skill as an artist. I really enjoyed working in team and hope that I could one day contribute in digital visuals and entertainment industry.

Yao Min Xin+

Biography
I have always loved cartoons and animation since young, and that was what sparked me to pursue a Diploma in Digital Animation after I received my ‘O’ level results – I wanted a path that I would enjoy. Honestly, I can’t say if it was the right decision or not; but I can tell you this:

I don’t regret it.

From the first time I did a simple animation, I felt that there was something magical about it. The glee and excitement that welled up in me when my characters come to life under my hands still lingers in my mind. It made me feel like a child again – like knowing that there is an adventure out there I will discover soon, and wanting to dash towards it right now.

Three years in this diploma course had taught me a lot. I am thankful for my lecturers being patient with me even though I am rather slow on picking up the skills.

In relation to this field, I enjoy painting, photography, video editing, and animating. Working with either traditional or digital mediums is fun, but my rendered works are mostly done with the latter. During my free time, I like to watch animated series/films, reading novels and manga, listening to music, and drawing fan-art.

My one hope is to be able to express freely with my creations, and reach others with them.

Internship Experience-

I am an active team member and will contribute to a team’s ideas and outcomes. I recognize it is important to work together as a collective. In Bandai Namco I worked with a diverse range of people. We overcame character and cultural differences to work effectively as a team to deliver the project.

During free periods of time with the help of the concept artists I work on my own projects. This mini projects helps temper my skills and build up on my portfolio. Practicing with Scott Robertson’s book fundamentals on free hand environment drawing. I worked on character design and creature design during this period of time as well. Studying on other artists works I have gained insights on some aspects of character design and stylistic choices.

I would like to thank the Concept team from Bandai Namco for their help in teaching me. Their input has proved immeasurable help in teaching me and showing me the way for artist after graduation. Their input has proved immeasurably invaluable life lessons, improving my mind-set towards art and making my person relation skills improve so much. And of course, this would not have been possible without the guidance of Miss Wendy and all our lecturers from Singapore Polytechnic, for their capital roles helped me get this chance.

Biography

“My soul is Pantone Blue
Submerged into the crystal clear Abyss waters
It is a sparkling beauty”

Anime is something I have a passion for and the varied styles in the medium helps me to pay attention to the vibrant colors around me in my daily life. Thus I am immersed in vivid colors of the distinctive art styles regularly. I am used to exercising my imaginations. As most shows feature really crazy concepts and alternate universes that you just can’t view realistically, I find myself using my imaginations much more regularly than your average person. As a result, I am generally much more creative and open minded.

After completing my ‘O’ levels, I wanted to work under a field which I have decided on my own. As I am an artist at heart I already knew what I wanted. Narrowing down my list of interests, I decided on joining a media-related course in Polytechnic. I decided upon DDA as my choice because it had a very attractive looking curriculum, felt very relevant to the industry as a new course and looked like the course which I would have the most fun in.

I am a professionally disciplined artist with educational experience working in a fast paced studio-environment. The 10 months internship experience has trained me to possess strong interpersonal skills and become a detailed orientated independent worker with the ability to meet goals and deadlines. My objective is to improve my current skill set in Entertainment Design. I would also like to experience the Video Game industry and to advance my position in this field further.

I not only was able to improve my speed at modelling and learnt from the veterans, but I’ve also risen from the dead. yay.

Cheryl Cai Jia Jing+

Biography
I’ve always been the “good student with bad grades” from primary school all the way to secondary school.
Academically, I was bad in everything. I just wasn’t interested.
I was in the NA stream and my score was so bad that I couldn’t proceed into secondary 5 and thus decided to pursue a Nintec in Digital Animation in Nintec instead.

Entering ITE was a changing point in my life.

I grew a lot in those 2 years in ITE, I not only was able to develop my interest, but also able to learn many necessary software skills essential for the industry’s needs. It also make me more motivated to work harder.

As I was a pretty slow learner, I didn’t do very well in my first year, but friends and lecturers around me were so accepting and helpful that I eventually graduated ITE with grades good enough to proceed on to Polytechnic.

Poly has also given me a fair amount of opportunities.

I am thankful for being given the chance for 1 year internship during my final year in Polytechnic.
It was a great opportunity for me to improve my skill set as well as experience first-hand real production in a professional environment.

Goh Si Ying+

Biography
Since young, I have always been interested in the art of storytelling, and the beauty in how films can portray things so beautifully. Now, I’m a final year student in Singapore Polytechnic and my interest in animation grew so much more. I am really happy that I’ve learnt the art of animation and had grew a passion for drawing.

I specialize in animation and it made me realized that animation takes a lot of patience and passion for one to be able to stay in it. And to me, that’s the beauty of animation. The way how a character could be so alive, the mood and the beauty in the composition really pulls me in and want to learn more about animation.

Although I am specialize in animation, I am also open to other fields of animation. For my final year project, I took the Changi Airport Project as I felt that motion graphics was another field that I would like to take a try on. After taking on the project, I really enjoy making motion graphic videos and this would also open up more job opportunities in the future after I graduate. I hope that as I enter the field, I would be exposed and gain more experience in animation and other similar fields in designs too.

Cheryl Yong+

Biography
Hello, my name is Cheryl. I have always wondered what to do in my life but I think that I’ve finally found my calling. Since I was a young girl, drawing has always been a part of my life. Dusty textbooks and scraps of papers filled with mindless doodles. Piles of sketchbooks and drawings on the back of my homework. I just live my carefree life and binge-watch cartoons peacefully (well, I still do). In my final year of secondary school, I got to know about this course from a friend and she told me to check it out. To be honest, I knew nothing about Animation. All I know is that I love to draw and watch Disney movies. But I am so glad that I checked it out.

I learned so many things and it completely changed the way I see the world around me. I never knew that this passion of mine ever existed and I want to get better at it. I have so much more to learn. After three years, despite of all of the ups and downs, I would plunge in headfirst and do it all over again. I want to bring my technicolour dreams into the black and white world.
